Lime for Creating Ideal Soil pH Levels

Lime is spread to make certain nutrients contained in the fertilizer more readily available for absorption by the plant while making some toxic elements less available (i.e. aluminum). More nutrients mean more efficient use of fertilizer. Liming also improves organic matter decomposition by helping to increase desirable microbial activity.

Lime products we have include:

  • Pelleted Lime
  • Powdered Lime
  • Urea (special order)
  • Pot Ash (special order)

Remember, we can special order any lime products, such as urea or pot ash, if you don’t see it on the list. Contact us for the latest information on fertilizer developments.

Getting Your Soil pH Tested by the County Cooperative Extension

We recommend having your soil tested by your UGA county cooperative extension service so you know exactly what nutrients your soil needs for maximum root development and plant growth. The correct pH level allows nutrients in the soil to be absorbed by roots and distributed to the blades where it’s converted into food. The soil test report indicates how many pounds per acre of fertilizer containing the right mix of essential elements are needed so you don’t over apply or under do it.

Please note that Cherokee Feed & Seed does not provide soil testing services.

Here’s a list of helpful sources for getting your soil tested in Georgia:

No-Till Seed Drill Rental

The most effective way to grow grass seed is to obtain 100% soil coverage. And the only way to accurately achieve this time-after-time is to plant seed using a no-till seed drill (grain drill) that places seed directly into the earth at an optimal depth without plowing, disking or tilling.

Cattlemen and horse farm owners use no-till seed drills to:

  • Refresh or strengthen existing pastures and hay fields
  • Establish new stands for hay, deer or other wildlife
  • Improve soil quality by adding legumes or daikon radishes
  • Practice good conservation by planting without losing soil to erosion or the wind

Cherokee Feed & Seed has two grain drill models to choose from depending on your needs:

For large fields – The Haybuster 107C with 10 ft. 6 in. seeding width

For smaller pastures or paddocks – The compact Great Plains 606NT with 5 ft. 8” seeding width

Both units require a 50 hp or greater tractor, hydraulic hose connections and pin hitch. The rental price is the same for each unit: $10/acre with a $150 minimum. Learn more about no-till seed/grain rental in Georgia from Cherokee Feed & Seed or contact us. Reservations are required, please.
