Fall is right around the corner, and that means it’s time to get your herd ready for the months ahead. Cattle nutrient needs shift with the seasons, so now is the perfect moment to take a good look at your feed program.
Start with phosphorus. As grasses dry down, they often lose phosphorus. If your forage runs low, switch to a high-phosphorus cattle mineral so your animals get what they need.
Keep the flies in check, too. Stick with Purina Wind and Rain Storm Fly Control Mineral with Altosid (IGR) for 30 days after the first frost. This helps stop flies from overwintering and jump-starting next spring’s population.
Thinking about weaning? Build up mineral and vitamin stores early. Offer Purina Stress Tubs in the creep feeder cage. If you don’t creep feed, just make sure your calves can reach the cattle mineral feeder along with the cows.
One more thing — cows often crave more salt as grasses dry out. Add extra salt to a granular mineral mix, or provide free-choice salt if your mineral tub doesn’t already include it.
